Physical Education and Health

  • This course will emphasize individual/personal physical fitness and wellness along with participation in a variety of sports and activities.

    The personal fitness component includes attention to muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, speed, power, goal setting and fitness planning. The wellness component examines the role of nutrition, activity/rest and your own lifestyle patterns to reflect on and modify when needed.

    Personal Wellness: Focus on the areas of mental, social and physical health

    • Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health.
    • Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks. Decision making
    • Evaluate personal wellness practices and apply lifetime health skill knowledge in order to solve real life scenarios. Goal setting

    Mental Health: Focus on emotions (anger and stress management), depression, health Triangle

    • Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology and other factors on health behaviors.

    Nutrition: Focus on basic nutrition knowledge and the health effects of nutritional choices

    • Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information, products and services to enhance health.

    • Classify the nutrient categories and analyze the effects of poor nutrition on overall health.
    • Compare and contrast the impact of food choices on the environment.

    Tobacco Alcohol and other Drugs: Focus on the affects of drugs, alcohol and tobacco while understanding how our decisions and peer pressure plays a role in the process

    • Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
    • Investigate health indicators and their influences on the health of the community and formulate an action plan for improvement.

    Human Sexuality: Focus on body function, dating, STDs and AIDS and more

    • Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.
    • Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family and community health.
    • Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.
    • Evaluate and assess the impact of sexual activity on the individual and the community.
